On behalf of Canada’s 23,000 barley farmers, the Barley Council of Canada (BCC) would like to thank the federal government for their investment in a project designed to develop a market for higher protein Canadian feed barley.
“Today’s announcement is instrumental in helping build our brand as a supplier of higher protein Canadian feed barley into China,” said BCC Chair Zenneth Faye. “The barley value chain is very grateful to Minister Bibeau and our federal government for their support in this important endeavour.”
The specific project, entitled “Developing a market for higher protein Canadian feed barley,” will run until 2021 and provide funding for market development activities to build and support an export market in to China for higher protein Canadian feed barley.
Activities will include incoming trade missions for potential customers, outgoing missions for Canadian barley producers and advocates, and other initiatives to build trust and highlight the unique traits of Canadian barley that differentiate it from our international competitors.
“As the third-largest producer of barley in the world, Canada relies on a sustainable and growing export sector in order to survive and thrive,” added Faye. “This funding will support our barley industry and we look forward to coordinating it through our national Council.”
The funding for this project was made available under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, which is is a five-year, $3 billion investment by federal and provincial governments. For this project, the BCC will match the federal government’s investment of just over $210,000, bringing the total matched investment to more than $420,000.
